LEGO® 2524 Knapsack Variants
There are at least two versions of the 2524 knapsack. The earliest mold appears around 1996. A later mold appears around 2009-10. The later version appears in white in the 2010 set 8083 Star Wars Rebel Trooper Battle Pack which contained either or both versions and the 2009 set 8083 Battle of Endor contained either or both versions in reddish brown. I have both versions in green released in 2010-2011. The reference I found had the old version in the 7595 Toy Story Army Men set and either version in the 5766 Log Cabin set. My copy of CMF Pilot from 2011 contains the older version in Dark Tan.
1996 version back view
This version has bedroll straps that terminate at the top of the box. At the widest point side-to side, this version measures 13.09mm.
2009 version back view
This version has bedroll straps that extend over the box. At the widest point side-to side, this version measures 12.99mm.
1996 version inside view
This version has larger markings on the inside of the piece and the sidewalls and bottom wall are narrower than those on the 2009 version. The sidewalls on the 1996 version tend to bow outward at the middle. I'm not sure if this was intentional or is due to age, but upon examining several pieces they all displayed the same appearance. Top to bottom this version measures 17.59mm. The width of the hollow is 9.75mm wide.
2009 version inside view
This version has smaller markings on the inside of the piece and the sidewalls and bottom wall are wider than those on the 2009 version. Sidewalls and bottom appear to be continuous. Top to bottom, this version measures 17.55mm. The width of the hollow is 9.52mm wide.
1996 version bottom view
This version has a seamed bottom section with the sidewalls projecting slightly below the bottom.
2009 version bottom view
Sidewalls and bottom appear to be continuous on this version. The injection pip is located on the bottom.
1996 version side view
The bedroll is placed closer to the neck loop and does not project beyond the edge of the box. The injection pip is located along the edge of the box flap near the neck loop. Back to front this version measures about 14.4mm.
2009 version side view
The bedroll is placed towards the outer edge away from the neck loop and projects beyond the edge of the box. Back to front this version measures about 15mm.
1996 version
The placement of the bedroll closer to the neck interferes with the use of most low-projecting hair and hat pieces.
2009 version
The placement of the bedroll away from the neck allows for the use of several hat and hair pieces.
